On September 28, 2018, the annual Dutch Chess Championship for Company Teams (“Nederlands Kampioenschap Bedrijvenschaak”) was held in Apeldoorn. With chess masters from numerous (large) organizations participating, the competition is fierce every year. But this year we came out on top: nearly 20 years after a hat-trick winning streak, the Capgemini chess team finally brought the championship trophy back home.
In everyday life they work as a project manager, SAP consultant, Quintic consultant and security & privacy consultant. But in their free time, they are chess masters: IM Frans Cuijpers, IM Floris van Assendelft, Joep Nabuurs and team captain Martine Middelveld. With two ties and four wins in the competition, they placed ahead of all 50 participating teams – including those from NN, Achmea, PWC and ING. A truly top-notch performance!
Expectations for the chess team were high. On top of the fact that all four members actively compete in the national Dutch Chess Tournament and two even hold the title of International Master, Capgemini hadn’t won a championship since 2000. In other words, the trophy case had been empty for a while. Fortunately the team’s preparations during the weeks leading up to the competition paid off. Frans, for instance, practiced by playing online chess matches at the highest difficulty level, which ultimately helped him to defeat all the grandmasters at the tournament! Give it a try …
Those who understand the game know that there’s much more to it than just moving a bishop, knight or queen. Indeed, behind every move there’s an entire strategy: something that is certainly familiar to the team members in their work as well. As for performing under pressure, that’s not a problem either. So will this Capgemini chess team pull off a hat-trick too? We’ll have to wait and see. In any case, we are eagerly looking forward to next year when they will defend their title in Rotterdam.
Are you also a genuine (chess) master in the field of IT? If so, then check out our current job opening and perhaps you’ll be representing Capgemini at next year’s Dutch Chess Championship for Company Teams or one of our other sports events!
